Dr Nicholas J. Ashbolt

Previously he was Head of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, where he continues as an Adjunct Professor as well as at the University of Cincinnati. He has 25 years of experience in environmental microbiology, with a focus on the fate and transport of environmental pathogens. Over the last 10 years he has worked in joint Australian-Sweden and European programs developing methods to interpret pathogen data with the aid of quantitative microbial risk assessment within an urban water sustainability framework. This work has contributed to the risk-based approach adopted in the recently published WHO guidelines for recreational, drinking and reuse waters. He has published 31 book chapters, 112 journal papers and over 100 conference proceedings since he joined UNSW in 1994.


Joel Bleth

Bleth earned degrees in Industrial Engineering (B.S 1975) and Law (J.D., 1978) at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.

After college, Bleth and his partner, Willard Tormaschy, started a pump business in Dickinson, ND, which has supported their ongoing work in water science.  Throughout most of the 1990′s, Bleth conducted fulltime laboratory research on various water quality improvement sciences.

In 2001, the company developed the SolarBee solar-powered long distance circulation machines for improving water quality in large bodies of water. SolarBee machines are operating in nearly all US states and in 15 countries worldwide. SolarBee, Inc. has received environmental awards in the US and Australia, including Artemis Project awards in 2009 and 2010. Bleth and Tormaschy were named Entrepreneurs of the Year for ND for 2008.


Ahren T. Britton (MSc, P.Eng)

Mr. Britton has more than 10 years experience in environmental engineering, specifically focused on the wastewater treatment industry. He is a co-inventor of Ostara’s technology and developed the first prototype of Ostara`s technology during his research at the University of British Columbia. His professional experience includes roles in engineering consulting, municipal utilities and heavy industry both in North America and in Australasia.


Brent Constantz, Ph.D.

Dr. Constantz specializes in novel, high-performance cements. He is the inventor on more than 60 issued U.S. patents, as well as many pending U.S. and foreign patent applications on the subject. Prior to founding Calera, he was the founder and CEO of three successful medical device companies: Norian, Skeletal Kinetics, and Corazon. His bone-fracture cements can be found in most orthopedic operating rooms in the Western world.

A Consulting Professor at Stanford University, Dr. Constantz has taught courses in biomineralization, carbonate sedimentology, and bone mineralization, and has conducted numerous seminars and Continuing Medical Education courses on the use of cement in bone fracture management. He serves on the board of directors of the Stanford Environmental Molecular Science Institute and is affiliated with the Woods Institute for the Environment, where his expertise is carbon dioxide sequestration in concrete and the built environment.

Dr. Constantz received B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees at the University of California, and received a post-doctoral appointment at the U.S. Geologic Survey and a Fulbright Scholarship at the Weizmann Institute.


David Delasanta

Mr. Delasanta has over 30 years of experience in environmental engineering and construction having worked for large A&E firms such as The Shaw Group, Metcalf & Eddy/Air & Water Technologies, and ICF Kaiser Engineers where he held Vice-President level positions in sales and marketing. He also held senior marketing and sales positions at several start-ups including RESNA Industries and SynGas Systems. He has a B.S. in Physics from Providence College, an M.S. in Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and an M.B.A. from San Jose State University.

Carrie Freeman is the Intel Corporate Sustainability Manager. She is responsible for developing policy and setting direction for corporate wide strategic sustainability efforts in reducing environmental footprint of products, operations and the supply chain. Carrie owns the strategic external alliances for Intel in the sustainability area and developing aligning internal sustainability policies. Previously, Carrie was the New Mexico environmental relations manager, and worked with state government agencies, non profit organizations and the community at large to drive environmental improvements within Intel and surrounding communities. Carrie has had numerous jobs at Intel New Mexico including: operations manager, technical program manager and industrial engineering manager. Carrie is recognized for her work on diversity, personal mastery, and career development efforts within the corporation. Carrie has worked for Intel for 12 years and holds an MBA in environmental policy and planning.


Paul Gagliardo

Mr. Gagliardo is well known throughout the United States, in Europe and Asia for his defining work on indirect potable reuse as a scheme to supplement the potable water supply in San Diego, California.

During his twenty plus years at the City of San Diego, Paul created and managed the Aqua2000 Research Center, where he helped develop the membrane bioreactor system from a novelty to the de facto technology of choice for recycled water applications. He prepared and submitted performance analyses to the California DHS for acceptance on over twenty new technologies.

Currently, Mr. Gagliardo is the Manager – Innovation Development for American Water. Paul is responsible for the identification and screening of ideas and navigating those selected ideas through a Stage-Gate process toward eventual commercialization inside and outside of American Water facilities.

Mr. Gagliardo is a registered engineer in the state of California and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health.  He was appointed to the State of California 2003 Water Plan Update Advisory Committee, and was instrumental in fund raising for the successful proposition 50 Water Bond campaign. He has authored over fifty technical, has given presentations on five continents and has been the invited keynote speaker on multiple occasions.


Jud Hill

A well-known private equity and investment banking executive in the water sector, Jud is currently Managing Director with NGP Global Adaptation Partners (NGP GAP), and is responsible for Water related investments.

Prior to joining NGP, he was a Managing Partner with Summit Global Management focused on strategic business development and private-market investments. Before that, he was a Managing director for The Halifax Group and Aqua International Partners (both affiliates of Texas Pacific Group). Mr. Hill earlier served as a Managing Director for HSBC, where he was responsible for investment-banking activities including water technology/services and water utilities.

Mr. Hill also has 15 years of operational management experience with Westinghouse Electric Corp. and Atlantic Richfield Corp where he held operating and executive roles in the environmental sector with a focus on water. He also serves as a trustee for the Water Keeper Alliance.


Dominic Kulik

Dominic Kulik has been an entrepreneur and investor for nearly 25 years. Since 2000, Mr. Kulik has been the founding Principal of Dakai Enterprises, an investment and management firm focused on early-stage sustainability markets, including clean-tech and water, media and education, and consumer products segments.

From 1986 through 1997, Mr. Kulik was the founding CEO of LEAD, USA, a national educational service firm focused upon fostering alternative energy and sustainable development programs, and Better World, an organic cotton clothing company launched with seed funders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, founders of Ben & Jerry’s, and Tomio Taki, founder of Anne Klein and Donna Karan fashion houses. He then spent five years managing venture portfolios with the Blue Dot Venture Fund, and privately for LBO financiers Michael Dubilier and Raymond Chambers.

Mr. Kulik served from 1992 to 1997 as a founding director of Business for Social Responsibility, and is presently the Chairman of Investors’ Circle, which he has helped direct since 2000. He holds BA and MBA degrees, with Honors, from Williams College and Columbia University Business School, respectively.


John Macomber

He is the former Chairman and CEO of the George BH Macomber Company, a large regional general contractor. At HBS, Mr. Macomber teaches Finance and Real Property courses in the elective curriculum including, “Real Property Asset Management,” “Real Estate Development, Design, and Construction,” and “Sustainable Cities: Urbanization, Infrastructure, and Finance.” Prior to coming to HBS, John was a lecturer at MIT in Civil Engineering and Real Estate. William S. Malarkey

Mr. Malarkey is responsible for investment banking activities in the rapidly expanding water and environmental sectors of the economy. With more than 16 years of experience in international utilities and infrastructure markets, his experience in the areas of strategy development, mergers and acquisitions, and project finance is brought to bear with the firm’s privately held and publicly traded clients.

Prior to joining Boenning & Scattergood, Mr. Malarkey headed business development efforts for an affiliate of Wexford Capital LLC in the water and environmental sector. He also served as vice president of business development at American Water, the largest investor-owned water utility in the U.S. that was previously owned by German based RWE. At American Water, he was responsible for all merger and acquisition activities and joint ventures, along with managing major client and partner relationships. Prior to that, he held senior merger and acquisition, and corporate development roles with the German utility groups RWE and E.ON. He also has worked as a management consultant and attorney in the utilities and infrastructure sectors.

His professional affiliations have included terms as an advisory board member for the Urban Water Council of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and as vice chairman of the Water Institute of the National Council for Public-Private Partnerships.

He earned his BS and JD degrees at Georgetown University, and holds an LL.M. degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He holds the Series 7 and 63 licenses.


Hon. Kathleen A. McGinty

The Honorable Kathleen A. McGinty is founding partner, Peregrine Technology Partners LLC, a firm focused on the commercialization of clean technologies. She is also a Director at NRG Energy, Inc., a leading wholesale power company.

Ms. McGinty recently stepped down as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and as Chair of the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority. During her tenure, she helped lead the state’s successful effort to attract market-leading renewable energy companies to headquarter and manufacture in Pennsylvania, bringing more than $1 billion in new investment and creating some 3,000 new jobs.

Previous to her service in Pennsylvania, Ms. McGinty was Bill Clinton’s Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality and Legislative Assistant and Environmental Advisor to then-Senator Al Gore. She also was a Senior Visiting Fellow for a year in New Delhi, India at TERI, the Tata Energy Research Institute. Ms. McGinty holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Saint Joseph’s University and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law.

G.G. has more than 35 years’ experience in the water industry. Before joining ERI he was a Senior Vice President and Corporate officer of US Filter Corp., a Fortune 500, NYSE company focused on the acquisition, turnaround, integration and growth management of more than 165 water treatment companies.

G.G. has also held senior management positions in a variety of global companies including Ionics, Fluid Systems, Fluor, Dorr Oliver and Combustion Engineering. He is a board member of the International Desalination Association (IDA) and a member of several other industry associations such as the European Desalination Society (EDS), the American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) and International Water Association (IWA).

Dave Pogue

As National Director of Sustainability, Institutional & Corporate Services, Dave Pogue is responsible for the leadership of CB Richard Ellis’ sustainability programs for the property and facilities management portfolio across the Americas. Mr. Pogue manages the development, introduction and implementation of a wide-ranging platform of sustainable practices and policies, working closely with Facilities Management, Project Management, Global Corporate Services and Asset Services to focus on achieving a consistent balance of maximum financial performance and responsible environmental stewardship.

Prior to leading sustainability programs, Mr. Pogue was Senior Managing Director of the Western Region and was responsible for all Asset Services operations in the western portion of the United States, overseeing service delivery for office, retail and industrial real estate properties totaling more than 250 million square feet.

Mr. Pogue also served as Executive Vice President, Ownership Services, for Insignia/ESG in the Western Region and joined CB Richard Ellis with the company’s acquisition of Insignia. Before joining Insignia, he was Director of Management Services for CB Commercial in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Previously, he was a Regional Partner and Senior Vice President with the Koll Company in San Jose. During more than a dozen years with Koll, he was credited with establishing the Asset Management Division for both the San Jose and Pleasanton regions.


Robert W. Puls, Ph.D.

Dr. Puls is the Director of Research for EPA’s Ground Water and Ecosystems Restoration Division. Before becoming director, he was Chief of GWERD’s Subsurface Remediation Branch. He has began working for EPA in 1987 and rose to Senior Research Soil Scientist in GWERD in 1998.

Dr. Puls’s experience includes work at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Hanford Site, researching the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. He has received funding for his work from EPA, DOE, the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Dr. Puls holds a B.S. in Soil Science and Natural Resources from the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. in Soil and Water Science from the University of Arizona. He has more than 25 years’ experience working in the environmental science field. Dr. Puls has authored or co-authored more than 100 research articles, book chapters, reports, and proceedings.


Vikram Rao, Ph.D.

Having spent more than 30 years at Halliburton, most recently serving as senior vice president and chief technology officer, Rao now serves as the Executive Director of the Research Triangle Energy Consortium (RTEC). RTEC was formed in 2007 by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, North Carolina State University and the RTI (Research Triangle Institute) International to highlight energy issues, better inform academics, industry, policy makers and investors, and conduct research and development to create sustainable sources of energy.

Rao is the author of more than 40 publications and has been awarded 24 patents in fields that include non-ferrous metal refining, alloy formulations, and oil and gas technology. Rao earned a doctorate degree and a master’s in engineering from Stanford University, and holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India. He also serves as a senior science advisor to Global Resource Corp., which features a patented microwave technology serving the oil and gas industry.

Currently working with Carollo Engineers, Andrew Salveson has 15 years of environmental consulting experience serving public and private-sector clients in the research and design of water and wastewater treatment systems. He is a licensed engineer in California and is a member of the International UV Association and Water Environment Foundation. Areas of experience include advanced wastewater treatment and disinfection process research, drinking water process research, and advanced water and wastewater treatment planning and design. Salveson’s recent WateReuse Foundation Projects have provided the industry with valuable information related to removal and biological impact of various TOrCs in wastewater. Salveson was the 2007 WateReuse Person of the Year.

Dr Peter Williams is the Chief Technology Officer  for IBM’s Big Green Innovations unit, whose role is to identify environmentally focused businesses for IBM to either develop or participate in – he is personally responsible for assembling, maintaining and developing the portfolio of businesses included.  His particular focus areas have been photovoltaic energy; developing green house gas reduction solutions and services for all types of organization, both public and private; and water management solutions, covering entire water resources (for example entire rivers or aquifers), utility infrastructures responsible for water supply, water quality and waste water management, and enterprise water management.

By background, Dr Williams is a management consultant with well over 20 years experience of bringing technology and business issues together to develop novel solutions and business models.  He has extensive experience of the public sector, including defense, as well as the high technology, retail and CPG sectors.  His PhD was awarded by the School of Management at the University of Bath,  England, in 1986.


Ronald Zegers

Mr. Zegers has over 35 years of experience in research, operation and maintenance of water facilities, both large and small systems, in Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana and Nevada.  He has held the positions of Chemist, Production Manager, Director and General Manager.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, with a Minor in Mathematics. He maintains State of Nevada Water Treatment 4 and Distribution 4 certifications.
